After the Mumbai attacks, the spotlight has been thrown on India's security services and security guards – London security forces are also sitting up and taking note.

The Mumbai terrorist attacks sent shock waves through the world. Another reminder that terrorists can strike at any time. And a horrific display of the death and misery terrorism can inflict. Security guards in India are widespread, but the security services have faced criticism in light of the tragedy. And the Mumbai attacks have also put the British security services on guard. The terrorism threat levels in the UK was classified as critical after the 2007 London bombings. Having a more aware police force and security guards, London is more prepared to look out for, and prevent a terrorist attack. But the very nature of a terrorist attack makes it hard to control. Despite that, the UK police and security forces have stepped up to make arrests and detentions of terrorist suspects as a result of covert missions and surveillance. After Mumbai, it was reported that security forces in the UK were urgently devising plans to stop a similar attack launched from the Thames. There could be a need for specialist security guards - London security experts have expressed concerns about the city being particularly vulnerable to a water-borne assault.

Security Guards: London Targets

A terrorism consultant was quoted in the press as saying the authorities were working hard in response to Mumbai. And the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has stepped up security along the Thames with specialist commandos and the Royal Navy increasing their presence. There are a number of high profile banks and hotels running alongside the Thames, as well as the obvious target – the Houses of Parliament. And those private companies and banks along the Thames should consider stepping up their regular security guards, London businesses could be particularly at risk in the UK. The concerns about a water-borne attack against the capital were highlighted after ten gunmen were believed to approach Mumbai using speedboats.
Boris Johnson told the press: “There is a great deal of work going on. There certainly are extensive preparations to stop a Mumbai-style operation on the Thames.”
A security review is investigating whether the Thames is sufficiently patrolled with security guards.
