Gordon Brown has announced a security recruitment drive that will see Britain’s security services double in size Gordon Brown, the UK Prime Minister, has announced a security recruitment drive that will see Britain’s security services grow to double their pre-9/11 sizes in terms of personnel numbers. The increase in the government’s security recruitment is part of Mr Brown’s plans to fight terrorism, which will also see increased demand for security recruitment at places like train stations, airports, hospitals and sports venues. Government security recruitment drive Speaking in November 2007, in the aftermath of the failed Glasgow Airport and London terrorist attacks in June, Mr Brown said that “robust physical barriers” will be built around at-risk buildings like the 250 busiest stations, airport terminals, ports and at “over one hundred sensitive installations”. In addition, the government is stepping up security recruitment. “Because of the terrorist threat, the size of the security service - which was under 2,000 in 2001 and is 3,300 now - will rise beyond 4,000, twice the size of 2001,” Mr Brown said.
The increase in security at “sensitive installations” and other buildings will see more security recruitment – most commonly in the private sector – as security measures like bag-searching and improved surveillance and screening are introduced at train stations and other transport terminals. Even the general public will take part in the security recruitment drive, as Mr Brown announced that up to 160 counter-terrorism experts will train civilian staff at cinemas, theatres, hotels, schools and places of worship to identify suspect activity, use CCTV to its best effect and ensure premises have secure emergency exits, regular searches and evacuation drills.
