Event Security – Make or Break

Effective event security can make or break an exhibition, festival, concert or product launch.

The news headlines are littered with warnings about breakdowns in event security. The world is an unstable place, from the huge instabilities triggered by global politics to the small-time crime that plagues our streets. When it comes to event security, disruption and unsocial behaviour are also top of the list. Whether it be a small product launch, a gallery or exhibition, a business party or music festival, event security can make or break the occasion. There are countless splinter groups that can disrupt an event – if your business has associations with animal testing for example, you could be targeted by unpleasant and threatening protesters. Certain events don't even need a motivation or incentive for disruption or mayhem to ensue. Musical festivals, or events where alcohol is involved, can spiral into unruly behaviour – event security is crucial to safeguard those attending as well as those organising the event.

Event Security and Reputation Management

Poor press as the result of unlawful or unpleasant behaviour at an event can cause long-term damage. Companies and organisations work hard to build up their reputation – time and expense that can be wasted because sufficient event security wasn't in place and an unfortunate incident happened. It's impossible to predict how a crowd may react, but it's possible to be prepared for all potential outcomes with well-trained event security staff. One event that hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons was the cash-strapped Denbighshire music festival. It had to be cancelled in 2009 after the 2008 event saw several arrests. Inadequate event security meant the trouble at the event left a big black mark against the organisers. Ten people were arrested in the town, with one fight inspiring a witness to say it was “like the gunfight at the OK Corral”. Police told organisers that it was necessary that they enforced proper event security with crowd control measures. But the cost of such event security measures and the loss of key grants after the poor PR in 2008 meant the Festival had to close.
The on-going news and reports of incidents in festivals across the UK highlights the importance of comprehensive event security. In 2007, a teenage girl was subjected to a serious sexual assault during a music festival in Scarborough. At the time of the assault, detectives say the beach area was packed. Efficient event security can help minimise the risks and maximise the safety of attendees.
